Is It Time For A Sewer Line Replacement?

When you discover that one of the drains in your home is slow to clear, it can be very unpleasant. You are either standing in dirty water in the shower or waiting for the sink to empty. But just as quickly as it got under your skin, the water disappears, and you forget about the slight inconvenience. Unfortunately, that slow clearing drain was a sign that you have a clog forming. And if you do not call in the plumbers for some preventative maintenance, you could have a flood in your future. But what does it mean when all of the drains in your home are slow to clear? Do you have a clog in every drain in your home?

The more reasonable conclusion is that you have an issue with your home’s sewer line. The sewer line is the one pipe that connects all of your home’s drains from toilets, tubs, showers, and sinks to the city sewer system. And when there is a problem with this pipe, it is apparent in all of your home’s drains. You might notice that toilets are slow to flush or do not flush thoroughly. You will also see that all drains clear more slowly and might even be making some gurgling noises as they finish draining.

Potential Sewer Line Issues

The sewer line in your yard is susceptible to a few issues. The pipe can be damaged from a shovel or other tool that hits it, it could crack when the surrounding soil settles, it could become crushed by tree roots, or it could just be old age. The biggest challenge of a sewer line issue is that the entire pipe is buried in your yard. And without a camera inspection from a licensed plumber, you will not know what is causing the issue.

How The Inspection Works

Technology has made sewer line issues much less costly and messy to evaluate. Your licensed plumber will deploy a tiny waterproof camera into the sewer line to search for damage, blockages, or signs of pipe deterioration. The images from inside the pipe will clearly show any of these issues. And your plumbing pro will even be able to locate a clog or crack in the pipe without doing any digging. This is a significant improvement over digging up the entire line to search for damage or clogs.

Repair Or Replace?

If the camera inspection reveals only a small blockage in the pipe or limited damage, a repair is the best choice for affordability and less destruction to your yard. However, if there are many cracks and other indications of deterioration, the intelligent choice is to replace the entire sewer line. Once you begin to have issues with clogs and cracks in an old sewer line, the cost of repairs will quickly exceed the cost to replace the pipe and stop worrying about a raw sewage flood in your home.

Trenchless Sewer Line Replacement

Your plumbing pros can replace an entire sewer line without digging up the existing pipe in many cases. The process involves inserting an epoxy-coated resin liner inside the old damaged pipe. Once the liner is in place, a removable bladder is inflated to hold the liner against the wall of the old pipe. In about 24 hours, the epoxy cures, and the liner and old pipe are not fused together to form a new sewer line.
